Essential alpha-amino acid in humans. Mixture of D-phenylalanine and L-phenylalanine. Precursor for tyrosine, the monoamine neurotransmitters dopamine, norepinephrine (noradrenaline), epinephrine (adrenaline), the neuromodulator phenethylamine and the skin pigment melanin.
